Little Traverse-Outside fun!

May 18, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

The infants have joined the excitement in our spring garden!  They explored the dirt in the garden and grassy areas that surround the area.  The dandelions were colorful, soft, and apparently tasty.  EJ and Julia played with them until they wilted.  Dean decided that the dirt in the garden was not ready so he tilled it with his own hands.  And, Enzo decided to relax in the beautiful weather.  Now, all we have to do is watch the vegetables grow.

Learning opportunities they experienced: Showing initiative, building relationships with adults and peers, moving parts of the body and exploring objects.

The infant and toddlers worked together to make a sign for Donya’s (our cook) baby.  They used ink pads and stamps to create a colorful sign (and themselves).

They had the opportunity to experience these Key Developmental Indicators while stamping:  Exploring objects, Exploring art material, Group participation, Playing with others and Moving parts of the body.

We are having a lot of fun with Beatrice (Bea) in the classroom.  She has given smiles to everyone that walks into the classroom.  Welcome to the Little Traverse room, Bea!

Bea is already learning new things here at Gretchen’s House.  Below are some photographs of her experiencing: Relationships with peers, Exploring objects, and Moving parts of the body.

Little Traverse-Hammer Art!

April 9, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

The infants used hammers to create some artistic masterpieces.  This activity combined a few different curriculum areas: physical development and creative representation. While using the hammers, the infants were strengthening their large muscles and developing their fine motor skills.  The infants also had the opportunity to use their sense of touch to explore the paint and smear it on the paper. The children were very focused while they explored and created with the materials. We hope you enjoy the photographs!

Spring Thaw Reminder

March 27, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

We know how important it is to support children in getting outside to experience and explore the outdoors every day. As snow has melted, we’ve had some wet and muddy areas on the playground. This certainly makes for an exciting playground to explore, but can definitely be the cause for some messy clothing!

As teachers juggle wardrobe changes, we ask that you please remember to send in extra clothes for your child. Tall rain boots may help as we make this transition. In addition, waterproof gloves and snow pants will help children stay warm and dry as they actively explore the playground. Labeling their articles of clothing also helps minimize confusion. We will have Gretchen’s House back up clothes available if needed. If your child does borrow GH clothes, please be sure to return them promptly so that other children have access to these items as well.  Thanks so much for your understanding as we make our way through the wet, muddy, but very welcome, spring weather.

Thank you!

Little Traverse- Splish, Splash!

March 4, 2015 by · 1 Comment

Water play is one of the babies’ favorite sensory activities.  Whether they are splashing themselves, or each other, laughter is heard throughout the room.  If they have this much fun with the water in bins, can you image what it will be like this summer in the sprinkler?  I cannot wait!

Little Traverse- Snow, Snow, and more snow!

March 4, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

It has been such a cold winter!  There have not been as many opportunities to play outside as we usually get here in Michigan.  On the days when the weather was nice enough, the babies went outside to explore the snow with the toddlers.  When we couldn’t get outside, Hillary and Betsy brought the outside to the babies.  The teachers added a little powder paint to the snow, and the babies made an art project and had a terrific time exploring the snow with all their senses.
