Betsey room-Painting the great outdoors!

May 18, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

The older toddlers added a little color to the preschool playground.  They used brushes to paint the rocks in the drain area.  The children talked about the colors that they used, pictures that they were painting, and about the activity of painting.

The learning opportunities they had included: Showing initiative, problem solving, speaking, exploring objects and identifying visual images.

The infant and toddlers worked together to make a sign for Donya’s (our cook) baby.  They used ink pads and stamps to create a colorful sign (and themselves).

They had the opportunity to experience these Key Developmental Indicators while stamping:  Exploring objects, Exploring art material, Group participation, Playing with others and Moving parts of the body.

Betsey room-Taking advantage of warm spring weather!

April 24, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

The older toddlers have been taking advantage of these beautiful spring days!  They went for a walk to the park across the street this past week.  They ate snack in the pavilion area, and then ventured to the play area.  There was a lot of climbing  the rock wall and rope climber.  The sand box was a big hit as well.  The children had the opportunity to play with children from our neighboring condominiums.  To finish off the adventure, the children walked around the pond.  The swans and ducks provided entertainment for the group as they swam around and eventually flew off.

While on this outing the children learned all sorts of things!  They experienced: Problem solving, Self help, Relationships with peers and adults, Playing with others, Group participation, Moving whole and parts of the body, Two way communication, Exploring objects, Speed, Seeing from a different viewpoint, and filling/emptying.  Wow!  A trip to the park packs in a lot of learning!

Spring Thaw Reminder

March 27, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

We know how important it is to support children in getting outside to experience and explore the outdoors every day. As snow has melted, we’ve had some wet and muddy areas on the playground. This certainly makes for an exciting playground to explore, but can definitely be the cause for some messy clothing!

As teachers juggle wardrobe changes, we ask that you please remember to send in extra clothes for your child. Tall rain boots may help as we make this transition. In addition, waterproof gloves and snow pants will help children stay warm and dry as they actively explore the playground. Labeling their articles of clothing also helps minimize confusion. We will have Gretchen’s House back up clothes available if needed. If your child does borrow GH clothes, please be sure to return them promptly so that other children have access to these items as well.  Thanks so much for your understanding as we make our way through the wet, muddy, but very welcome, spring weather.

Thank you!

Jamie

We are excited to announce that Alicia Lin and her parents, Dave and Karen, have joined our classroom.  Alicia started her week with lots of movement by meeting Tammy Holley for gym time.  The balls and hula hoops were a big hit.  Then, she used a paint and some paint to make a creation for her first week poster.  Welcome to Lin family!

Betsey room- What can you find?

March 6, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

The older toddlers used flashlights to find all kinds of things in the classroom.  They found it especially interesting to shine the flashlight on the ceiling and on themselves.  There was a lot of cause and effect, anticipating events, and locating object learning involved in this activity.

Betsey room-Taste testing!

The children have been eating  ice and snow on the days that we are able to go outside.  Sarah and Denise froze lemon and lime popsickles on a day that the weather was too cold to go outside.  As you can see, the tart popsickles were received with mixed responses.  Later in the week, we froze juice pops for a sweeter experience.
